Summary:08/16/2019
Ermolos reported out that they got a Goblin to talk and he had said “Whitechin’s Empire is expanding” and had referred to Whitechin as “The Great Dog”.
Ailin told the gang that they seemed like they were as ready as they could be unless...they could get something out of that crazy severed head in the barrel.
Rikara suggested that Fiosa swing by Ermalos’s shop to make sure the Hellknights were not hanging around.
Vreth meanwhile began to talk to the head whose name he learned was Khazray Kuelata. He learned that she was beheaded and put in with the Chelish Crux because her master, Mahlak, had intended her to suffer and be humiliated. She said that once she had power but had lost a political battle and was therefore punished by the archdevil. Vreth took pity on her and asked how he could help her. She replied that powerful magic was the only way. They realized they were not powerful enough to help her.
Vreth asked if she knew anything about Delvehaven. She replied that she knew much and had lived there for a time with Dargentu Vheed, before going off on a profanity-laden tirade against the man for several minutes. She explained that Vheed was to organize the reclamation of the lodge and kept her on a shelf for an entire year. She said if she were to see it again, she could offer advice on what to expect.
Vreth made her promise that if they took her from this place and allowed her to come with them, that she would be loyal to him and all he was loyal to. She agreed.
The party gave the rest of the Shield their orders. Ermalos and Amaya were going to go do some recon about “Whitechin”. The Bastards Team were going to just hang out for the day. It was decided that Janiven and Arael would come with the party. Ailin would come with them as well. Mathalin and Sclavo, it was decided, would gather information about things going on in the Hinterlands. Dosga, Tarvi and Larko also decided to keep an eye on things around the hideout. Rizardo decided to take the day off from his Shadowbeast.
Since none of these plans could be enacted until later, the gang decided to head to church at the behest of Igni. Only Kriskahn said no.
Before leaving, Rikara went to the basement to tell Garakas that half his gang was dead, including the fearsome Dravano, the Digger. The boy seemed surprised at this...but then asked about Palaveen. Rikara suggested that if the gang leader was as big a fake as the rest had been, it wouldn’t be long before he’d been brought to heel as well. Before leaving Rikara suggested that if the boy wanted off the sinking ship he was on, they would be perhaps willing to take him into their fold. He said he’d think about it.
The gang went to church. Dosga and Esmell made out in the back the whole time, Vreth and Des sat politely, whispering only seldomly back and forth. Igni was rapt with attention and Rikara found it charming.
Rikara went up with Igni to talk to Glorybuff after the service. Igni said that she needed to touch base and he needed to see her here. Glorybuff was happy to see Igni and wished her well on her journey...whatever it was. He said he hoped she would join them on Remembrance Day. At that moment, Bear the Rabbit came hopping up to Glorybuff and into his arms. Igni asked for any wisdom the first sword may have and he told her to adhere to her Paladin code in all she did. After bidding Glorybuff adieu, Igni cast a private prayer for Arael.
Vreth walked up to a higher ranking priest and asked about a greater restoration spell. The man replied that for a church-goer it would be 900...for a non-church-goer 1000.
Meanwhile across town, Kriskahn and Robahl were having lunch and discussing potential scripts for her. She dropped a hint that Corvinus was writing a script that might be good. Robahl insisted that it had a strong female protagonist...AND A SEX SCENE!
On the way back to the hideout, Vreth asked Desdemona if she planned still on following Asmodeus...she replied that “No...he didn’t do me any favors.”
Igni and Rikara cleared the air about the dwarf not trusting the half-orc about whom she worshipped. Igni claimed it came from a place of love and that she didn’t want Rikara to be lost. Rikara was pleased with this and shared that things were going well with Ermalos.
They all came upon Kriskahn in the street on the way back…
Desdemona: What’s playing at the theater at this time of day
Rikara: She is.
All of a sudden, Vreth remembered that he was to meet with Chassidy Drovenge per his missive received at the High Opera. The gang went to her estate and were shown to a barge which was about to take a short pleasure cruise about the city.
When they were shown aboard Chassidy introduced them all to her Grandfather, Visendio (who did NOT seem happy to see them), her friend and Vuiper Givell, and her bodyguard Avassi Seraphian, an elven woman who looked oddly familiar. Rikara asked about her armor and weapons and tried to sell her on buying from Ermalos’s shop in the future. The woman was cold in response.
Vreth, under the guise of “Mourncrest”, went on about the deal they would make and the others tried to work in that they were weapon merchants, specializing in exotic weapons...like the bladed scarf Rikara had looted from one of the Sisters of Eiseth.
Both of the men seemed dissatisfied with this offer, the Chassidy’s grandfather even going so far as to insult her for her foolishness (insinuating that this was what happened when you let a woman play at being a merchant.) As the disagreement came to a head, Chassidy diffused the situation and suggested they just enjoy their lunch. When the servants were bringing out the meal, one of the girls slipped and spilled on Chassidy’s dress. The wealthy woman snatched her hand and threatened her, much to the delight of Vuiper and her grandfather, Avassi standing by, presumably ready to cut of the girl’s hand. The party was frozen at the sudden change in mood and Rikara, able to take no more, began helping the girl clean up the mess. Vuiper reprimanded her for this kindness, and even the servant urged her to take her seat and resume the meal. The conversation turned to a tour of the city...of sorts...It was somewhat morbid and Chassidy seemed to make a point of mentioning the Council of Thieves. As the “trade deal” recommenced, Vuiper urged Chassidy to not accept. She then told “Mourncrest” that she would think on his offer. Rikara snuck the belittled servant girl a gold with the dishes she was clearing.
Igni tried to make conversation with Vuiper who revealed he was a Cleric or Abadar...and of course Asmodeus. Igni revealed that she worshipped Iomedae...and of course, Asmodeus.
Rikara watch this and she was being watched very closely by the Elven woman whom she gruffly addressed, to a minimal reply.
Suddenly, Igni realized why the woman looked so familiar...she looked very much like Arael.
Chassidy fairly booted them off her barge at the next port. Vreth was charming upon departure, Chassidy quite cold. As soon as they were off the property, Vreth listened aboard the barge with a scroll of clairaudience. Visendio was tearing into Chassidy about how stupid and foolish inviting those clear dimwits had been. She fired back about how she was allowed to make her own deals and how he should start to respect her and see her as an equal. He shot back that she would “NEVER BE AN EQUAL!” Vuiper attempted to calm the situation, but still urged her to not accept Mourncrest’s offer. She scoffed and said she was going to talk to Acardian. Vuiper also thought this foolish but she rebuked him and that was the last thing Vreth heard as the boat went from range of the spell.
Vreth proposed that they maintain contact with the Drovenge family. With some hesitation, the rest of the party agreed. Vreth thought that her mentioning the Council of Thieves was a threat.
When they arrived back at the hideout, Arael asked where they had all been. Vreth relayed the events of the afternoon. He seemed to think this was a decent use of their time and said little more on the subject.
As they were getting ready to leave for Delvehaven, Igni walked over to Arael and asked whether he had family around here, or at all. Arael said that his father did not live near here…he said that he had left Westcrown when he was eighteen with his father. Igni told him that aboard the barge that afternoon there had been an elf that looked a lot like him. He asked her name and when Igni gave it, his face contorted. The woman was indeed his mother and she was the reason he had left with his father…and part of the reason he came back. He told Igni they should talk more later and Igni told her she would help any way she could. Arael seemed to not like the idea telling her that Avassi was dangerous and making her promise not to engage her were she not around. Arael asked if anyone had spoken to her…and Igni assured him it was just passing conversation on the barge. At the urging of the others, the whole party finally left for Delvehaven, bidding farewell to their loved ones within the hideout.
They found the lodge and found it was boarded up. They consulted Khazray and she offered guidance that the yard may be mined and the group took heed. After getting within the gates and bypassing some terrible traps, they found their way inside. Within the lodge they saw numerous paintings which were mostly vandalized, though one remained untouched. It was a portrait of two men, Bisby and Ilnerik killing a triceratops. The platform in the center of the room however, which should have house the great beasts skeleton, laid empty. Rikara lamented “that would have been quite a thing to see.”
They made their way into the library and there seemed to be four of some reverence in placement. The Shipwreck of Hokrom Crinn, Skorin Castall and the Seige of Moinspire, The Lycanthropy of Everen Townsend, Memoirs of a Hatchling Nursemaiden, and the Imprisonment of Marcus Trone. They each snagged one of the books planning on selling them later. Rikara looked at hers and was momentarily disgusted that there were no pictures. She was overwhelmed by memories of Skorin Castall and found that while the experience was terrible, she was stronger for it as though she had been there herself. At first when she snapped back to reality, she urged those around her not to read the books, but upon feeling stronger as she did, she thought maybe it was best that they do. One by one, they each read their tomes, Kriskahn read Shipwreck, Vreth read Memoirs, Igni read Lycanthropy, and Areal read Imprisonment. One by one they relived wonderful and terrible memories not their own…and each was stronger for the trial.
They decided to move forward and Khazray told them that this room was not dangerous and that it was a restaurant. Inside, there was a large fishtank with nothing left in it but murky water and bones.
Through the water, they could see something coming toward them…a skeleton of a triceratops.
They battled bravely against the terrifying beast, luring it back and forth across the gigantic room. Kriskahn became a mastadon in attempt to fight the monster. Igni and Vreth slung spells and Arael and Janivin did all they could. As Rikara hid in a hallway, thinking she was safe the horrible creature burst through the wall and gored her through the gut…which very nearly killed her.
Vreth stepped out and screamed at the monster, getting its attention before firing a fireball at it and the thing collapsed to ashes.
Igni made it over to Rikara as she was bleeding to death and healed her just enough to stay alive.
